Baga Gazriin Chuluu is a striking granite rock formation rising dramatically from the vast steppe of Dundgovi Province in central Mongolia, approximately 250 kilometers south of Ulaanbaatar. This geological wonder consists of weathered granite hills reaching heights of up to 1,768 meters above sea level, creating a surreal landscape of massive boulders, narrow canyons, and natural caves scattered across roughly 300 square kilometers of otherwise flat grassland. The area holds deep spiritual significance for Mongolians, with ancient rock paintings, ruined temples, and meditation caves that once housed Buddhist monks dotting the rocky terrain. Beyond its cultural and historical importance, Baga Gazriin Chuluu serves as an important wildlife habitat, home to ibex, argali sheep, and various bird species, while natural springs provide vital water sources in this semi-arid environment.

Begin your Mongolian adventure with a morning departure from Ulaanbaatar, heading towards the captivating Middle Gobi region. After preparing our vehicles, embark on a scenic 4–5-hour drive to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a remarkable granite formation shaped by natural forces over millennia, offering an ideal setting for hiking and exploration.

Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed by a local nomadic family and treated to a homemade lunch, providing an authentic taste of nomadic life. After a morning immersed in the tranquil lifestyle of Gobi nomads, we savor a traditional breakfast before bidding farewell to our gracious hosts. Our journey continues deeper into the Gobi Desert, with our first stop at Sum Khukh Burd in Adaatsag Soum, Dundgovi Province. Here, we explore the ruins of a 16th-century stone castle perched on a small island within a lake, offering a unique glimpse into Mongolia’s historical architecture.

The structure stands approximately 7-8 meters tall, 10 meters wide, and 25 meters long, with walls 150 cm thick. Commissioned by the son of a Tibetan nobleman, the temple remained roofless due to his departure before its completion and subsequent destruction by lightning strikes. We then proceed through the expansive Gobi steppes towards Ongi Monastery.

After a 4–5-hour drive, we arrive at our destination and settle into a tourist ger camp. Following a brief rest, we embark on a short hike to the ruins of Ongi Monastery. Established in 1660 along the Ongi River in Saikhan-Ovoo Soum, Dundgovi Province, this once-grand monastic complex housed over 1,000 monks across 30 temples and four Buddhist universities before its destruction in 1939.
