Which Countries Are Visa-Free for Mongolia in 2026?
Citizens of more than 60 countries can enter Mongolia without a visa in 2026. There are two separate categories: countries with permanent bilateral agreements, and a temporary visa exemption group extended through December 2026.

Permanent Visa-Free Countries (Bilateral Agreements)
These countries have long-standing treaties with Mongolia. Citizens can enter visa-free for the listed duration:
| Country | Visa-Free Stay |
|---|---|
| United States | 90 days |
| Argentina | 90 days |
| Brazil | 90 days |
| Canada | 30 days |
| Chile | 90 days |
| Germany | 30 days |
| Japan | 30 days |
| Kazakhstan | 90 days |
| Kyrgyzstan | 90 days |
| Malaysia | 30 days |
| Russia | 30 days |
| Serbia | 90 days |
| Singapore | 30 days |
| South Korea | 90 days |
| Thailand | 30 days |
| Turkey | 30 days |
| UAE | 30 days |
| Vietnam | 30 days |
US citizens can stay up to 90 days without any visa application. Per the US State Department, no visa is required for tourism or business visits under 90 days. You need a valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity — that is the only requirement for Americans.
Temporary Visa Exemption: 34 Countries Through December 2026
Starting in early 2023, Mongolia added 34 mostly European and Pacific countries to a temporary visa-free list. Mongolia’s immigration authorities confirmed this exemption has been extended until January 2027. Citizens of these countries get 30 days visa-free:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
For most of the travelers Atlas Mongolia Travel works with — from the US, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand — the answer is simple: no visa needed, just bring a valid passport.
The 48-Hour Registration Rule (Everyone Must Do This)
This is the part that catches people off guard. Every foreign national entering Mongolia — regardless of visa status — must register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 48 hours of arrival.
This applies even if you are American, British, or Australian and entered completely visa-free.

How it works in practice: If you are staying at a hotel or licensed tourist ger camp, they register you automatically. This is standard — your accommodation provider does it as part of their legal operating requirements. You do not need to do anything yourself.
If you are staying with a private family, renting an apartment, or in some informal arrangement, your host is responsible for the registration. It can also be done directly online at immigration.gov.mn.
The consequence of skipping it: A fine upon departure. Mongolian immigration catches it when you go through exit border control, and you cannot leave until the fine is paid in full to the Immigration Agency. Do not skip this step.
When clients arrive at Chinggis Khaan Airport and Atlas Mongolia Travel is handling their transfer, we remind them about registration immediately. Their hotel or ger camp takes care of it that day. If you are organizing your own trip, confirm with your first accommodation that they will register you on arrival.
Do I Need a Visa for Mongolia?
Check both lists above first. If your country does not appear in either the permanent bilateral group or the 34-country temporary exemption, you likely need a visa.
The good news: Mongolia issues e-visas to citizens of 98 countries, which covers most of the world. The process is fully online through evisa.mn. If your country is not on the e-visa eligible list, you will need to apply through a Mongolian embassy or consulate in person before traveling.
How to Apply for a Mongolia E-Visa
The e-visa application is straightforward. Here is what the process looks like from start to finish.
What you will need:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from your planned travel date
- Passport-size digital photo
- Scanned copy of your passport bio page
- Credit or debit card for payment
The process:
- Go to evisa.mn — Mongolia’s official portal, operated by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia
- Select the K1 tourist visa (for tourism stays up to 30 days)
- Fill out the application form with your personal and travel details
- Upload your passport scan and photo
- Pay the fee (approximately $50-70 USD, non-refundable)
- Receive your e-visa by email within 72 hours
Print a copy of your e-visa or keep it accessible on your phone. Airlines may ask to see it before boarding, and border officials will check it on arrival.

Important notes:
- The e-visa is non-extendable and non-convertible. If you need more than 30 days, apply for a different visa category in advance.
- A visa does not guarantee entry — border officials retain the right to refuse admission.
- Processing is officially 72 hours; build in a buffer of a few extra days if your travel dates allow it.
- For questions, Mongolia’s immigration support email is visasection@immigration.gov.mn
Entry Requirements at Chinggis Khaan International Airport
Chinggis Khaan International Airport (IATA: ULN), located about 52 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar in Sergelen, handles almost all international arrivals. Direct flights operate from Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Hong Kong, and several Central Asian cities.
When you land, here is what to expect at immigration:
Documents at the immigration counter:
- Passport valid for 6+ months
- E-visa or other visa documentation if required
- Arrival card (filled on the plane or available at the airport)
Currency declaration: Mongolian law requires you to declare any cash, financial instruments, or cryptocurrency worth 15 million Mongolian togrog or more — roughly $4,370 USD as of late 2024 — to customs officials on both entry and exit. This applies in both directions.
After clearing immigration: Your accommodation registers you within 48 hours as described above. That is the only remaining administrative step. Mongolia is rated Level 1 by the US State Department (exercise normal precautions). It is a straightforward country to arrive in.

Overland Entry: Border Crossings from China and Russia
Mongolia shares land borders with China to the south and Russia to the north. Overland entry is popular with travelers doing the Trans-Mongolian Railway or combining Mongolia with a broader Central or East Asian trip.
Only two crossings are consistently open to foreign travelers:
Zamiin Uud (southern border with China)
This is the Mongolian side of the Erlian/Erenhot crossing — the main land route for travelers coming from Beijing on the Trans-Mongolian Railway.
- Open: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (closed Mongolian and Chinese public holidays)
- Vehicles: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- The Trans-Mongolian train crosses here; schedules are built around border hours
Sukhbaatar/Altanbulag (northern border with Russia)
The main crossing for travelers coming from or going to Siberia and the Trans-Siberian Railway.
- Open: 24 hours
All other land border crossings are open sporadically and are not reliably accessible to foreign travelers. The US State Department is clear: do not plan an overland route through lesser-known crossings without confirming current status first. The Mongolian government publishes border status updates in Mongolian, and the situation can change.
The same visa rules apply regardless of entry point. Visa-free travelers are visa-free at any border. If you need a visa, arrange it before arriving at the crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do US citizens need a visa for Mongolia?
No. US citizens can enter Mongolia visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date. You still need to register with Mongolian Immigration within 48 hours of arrival, but your hotel or ger camp handles this automatically.
Do I need a visa for Mongolia if I am from the UK, Australia, or the EU?
No, not in 2026. Citizens of the UK, Australia, and all EU member states are covered under Mongolia’s temporary visa exemption, extended through December 2026. You can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. US, Canadian, German, and South Korean citizens have separate permanent bilateral agreements with different allowed durations.
How do I apply for a Mongolia e-visa?
Apply at evisa.mn — Mongolia’s official Immigration Agency portal. You need a passport with 6+ months remaining validity, a passport photo, and a payment method. Processing takes up to 72 hours. The fee is approximately $50-70 USD. The e-visa covers citizens of 98 nationalities and allows a 30-day tourist stay.
What is the 48-hour registration rule in Mongolia?
All foreign visitors must register with the Mongolian Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival, regardless of nationality or visa status. If you are staying at a hotel or tourist ger camp, they register you automatically as part of their operating requirements. If you skip registration, you will be fined at exit and cannot depart until the fine is paid in full.
Can I extend my stay in Mongolia beyond the visa-free period?
If you entered visa-free, extending beyond your allowed duration requires visiting the Immigration Agency of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar before your time expires. Overstays are treated seriously — fines accumulate daily, and you cannot leave the country until they are paid in full.
What should I do if my travel dates fall into 2027 when the current visa-free exemption expires?
The 34-country temporary exemption runs through December 31, 2026. If you are traveling in 2027, verify the current status with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia or your nearest Mongolian embassy before booking. The exemption has been renewed twice already, but future renewals are not guaranteed.
What to Sort Before You Land
Mongolia’s visa situation is one of the easier parts of planning a trip here. Most travelers from the US, Europe, and Australia arrive with nothing to prepare — just a valid passport.
The one thing that catches people off guard is the registration requirement. If you are booking with a tour operator, it is handled. If you are going independently, confirm it with your first accommodation before you fly.
Once you have landed, cleared immigration, and registered — the entire country opens up. The Gobi Desert, the Altai Mountains, the central steppe, the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag. All of it is a drive or a short flight away from Ulaanbaatar.
